The first 48 hours after storm damage to a roof

Make the rooms under a damaged roof safe, record what happened, and send a quote request. This is not a promise of a same-day visit.

The first two days after a storm are for keeping people safe, stopping the damage from spreading, and recording what happened so a quote is about the roof you have now. They are not a promise that Micheletti Construction will be on site before the next cloud. The form can be marked emergency. A person still has to read it. Treat the hours in between as your own safety problem, not as a gap in which the ceiling will politely wait.

This note is about wind and rain damage: lifted sheets, a punctured slope, a valley that overflowed, a ridge that left. It is not about Harmattan dust by itself, which is a dry-season maintenance issue written up on the Abuja page. Dust did not peel a sheet off a house. Wind and water did.

Hour by hour, without heroics

Get people out from under a sagging ceiling, a cracked slab soffit, or a sheet that is banging. Children and anyone sleeping in a top-floor room move first. A soaked mattress can be replaced. A ceiling board that comes down is heavier than it looks.

Electricity next. If water is near a fitting, or the roof is open above a wired room, switch off the affected circuit at the distribution board if you can reach the board without standing in water. Do not stand on a wet floor and pull a plug with a wet hand. If you cannot isolate the power safely, stay out of the room and say so on the form. A quote request is allowed to include “we cannot enter the room.”

Look up from a dry, sound place. You are checking whether the building is open to the sky, whether a sheet is lifting and could become a blade in the next gust, and whether water is still arriving or only dripping from what is already wet. A lifting sheet on a single-storey house may be something a calm adult can temporarily hold down from a ladder on firm ground, with another adult footing the ladder, using a rope or a heavy tarpaulin, not using their body as a weight on the metal. If the sheet is high, thin, or still moving in the wind, leave it. A fall in the first hour helps nobody.

Water that is pooling on a flat deck against a parapet needs an outlet. Clearing leaves from a gutter you can reach from a safe balcony is useful. Walking a wet stone-coated slope to find the leaf is not.

What a temporary cover is, and what it is not

A tarpaulin that is large enough to cross the ridge, or to cover the hole with a generous margin, tied to fixed points and not only to the damaged sheet, can keep the next rain out of a room. It will try to become a sail. Weight the ties, and do not nail through a sheet you hope to reuse unless you accept those holes. A nylon banner, a mattress, or a board leaned on the slope will be in the compound by morning.

Do not spread bitumen, cement, or roofing felt onto a wet, moving sheet and call it secured. It will not bond, and it will be in the way of the real repair. Do not start stripping neighbouring sound sheets in the hope of “getting ahead.” You will open more of the house than the storm did.

Inside, move what you can from the drip line. Buckets and a towel are fine. Cutting the ceiling to drain a pool is a last resort when the board is about to fail, and the cut should be where the water actually is, with power off and nobody under the knife. A wild hole hides the path and soaks the room below.

Record it while it is still true

Photographs from the ground or a window: the whole slope, the lifted piece, the room, and the access (gate, alley, parked cars, overhead cables). A short note of when the storm hit and whether rain is still forecast. The neighbourhood. If a tree or a neighbour’s tank is now on the roof, say that. Those facts change the first visit more than the brand of sheet.

Send the quote form with timing set to emergency if the interior is open to weather or the sheet is unsafe. Set it to the next few weeks if the storm has passed, the cover is holding, and you are looking at a proper repair rather than a rescue. Attach the photos. Three is enough. Do not wait to compose a perfect account.

Keep the tarpaulin story honest when someone replies. “We covered the east slope” tells the next person where to start. “We fixed it” when you mean you tied a sheet down will produce the wrong tools.

What differs by city, even in a crisis

A Lagos storm sits inside a very long wet season. NiMet’s 2025 outlook put 250 to 290 rainy days on the state. A temporary cover may have to survive more than one follow-up storm before a full repair is wise or even possible. Build the cover as if tomorrow will also be wet. Low-lying compounds, including areas the state climate risk assessment mapped for flooding in Kosofe, Ikorodu, Eti-Osa, and others, may have water at ground level as well as at the roof. Do not stand in floodwater to “just fix the eave.” The roof job can wait behind the electrical and the drowning risk.

An Abuja storm is often the first concentrated rain after months of dust, or a squall inside the single wet season that the 2025 outlook ends in the FCT by late November. A gutter packed with Harmattan fines can overflow and look like sheet damage. Photograph the outlet. If the sheet is still seated and the water came over the gutter, the emergency may be smaller than it feels. If the sheet has lifted, the dust is irrelevant and the cover is the job.

An Ibadan storm in the second rainfall peak can reopen a patched corrugated roof that seemed quiet in August. The 2012 survey’s finding — corrugated iron on 69 percent of households in that sample — is a hint that the sheet may be old and thin. Do not walk it because the house is only one storey. Thin iron fails under a foot. Cover from the eaves if you can do that safely, and say on the form that the sheet is original iron, a patchwork, or something newer.

What the reply can and cannot be

Micheletti Construction reviews emergency requests and follows up the way you asked: phone, email, or WhatsApp, on your details. Their WhatsApp is +234 803 667 9688. That is not a guaranteed night dispatch, and it does not promise a two-hour arrival. If the form returns an error that email is not configured, nobody has the request. That matters more in a storm than on a quiet day. Read the error. Send again when delivery works, and keep the temporary cover in place.

Insurance, a landlord, or a tenants’ association may want the same photographs. Take them once, clearly, and share them. Do not invent a police report or a wind speed you did not measure. “The sheet lifted during last night’s storm” is a fact. A made-up gust figure is not, and it does not change the repair.

When the two days are over, the roof is either held or it is not. The permanent work — repair or replacement — is a separate quote, using the cost drivers that are actually in front of you: access, how much sheet is bent, whether the purlins moved, and whether the rooms below stayed dry. The emergency cover is not that quote. Leave it in place until the permanent work starts.

Questions people ask

Will someone come today if I choose emergency?

Emergency tells Micheletti Construction the water is active or the roof is unsafe. It does not book a clock time. Keep people clear of the damaged room and cover what you can safely cover. If the form errors, the request was not sent.

Should I nail the sheet back down?

Only if it is low, the wind has dropped, and you can do it from a secure ladder without standing on a damaged slope. Nails through a sheet you hope to keep are new holes. A tied tarpaulin is often the better two-day answer.

The ceiling is stained but the sheet looks normal. Is that storm damage?

It may be a lap or a gutter that overflowed under heavier rain, or a path that was already there. Photograph both. Do not strip the roof until someone has distinguished a crisis from a leak that can wait for a dry working day.

Who do I call if there is no number on the site?

You do not call a company number, because none is published. You send the form and choose how they should reach you. For immediate danger to life, use the local emergency services you would use for any other hazard. This website is not that service.
